Đèn giấy giang | Giang paper lamp

Design brief:
Designing Decors & Objects based on the theme of the competition “Embracing Constraints”: utilizing local resouces, and increasing the potential for reuse, production and integration into daily life.
Design story:
The central material chosen is called “giang paper” - a type of paper that plays a significant role in the spiritual culture of the H’mong people. “Giang paper” possesses good translucency and is a local natural material that effectively conveys the cultural stories of the H’mong people. Therefore, I selected “giang paper” to align with the given theme.

I also chose the simplified form of Trấn Biên Temple - Đồng Nai to be the main motif for the lamp, allowing for the storytelling of the cultural intersections of Vietnam.
Process:
Starting with sketching and conceptualizing using design software, the initial design of the “Giang paper Lamp” was selected to proceed in the competition. In the next stage, to complete the entry, I needed to turn the drawing into a prototype, both for display at the event and to enhance the persuasiveness of the design.

Testing various proportions was crucial in lighting equipment design, even when using just a simple LED bulb, to ensure the following factors:
- Highlighting the product’s essence through the deliveryof lighting effects with “giang paper”.
- Ensuring the design narrative (Trấn Biên Temple image).
- Optimizing materials and production processes.
Process:
The stages to complete the prototype included: framing, installing the light, painting, paper covering.

Materials: wooden frame, “giang paper” (a type of paper), brass bell.
Colors: cream and dark green.

Prototype:
There are still many limitations as the prototype was entirely handmade. I hope that when the product is put into production, the manufacturing processes can be optimized, resulting in better outcomes.
The artwork was exhibited at the Thai Hoc House, Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám), Hanoi, during the Vietnam Design Week 2023
